About the organization: 

Agora Microfinance Zambia (AMZ) is a rural microfinance company that operates under a non-deposit microfinance license from the Bank of Zambia. Currently the Company works with some 23,000 rural clients in four provinces of Zambia through eight branches and a staff of 95. The Company aims to expand and strengthen its operations with a long-term goal of national reach, strong financial and social performance and overall contribution to the Zambian economy and society.

About the Job: 

The Chief Executive Officer will lead the next phase of AMZ’s development, which will focus on establishing existing systems, growth and expansion, and consolidation of the strong portfolio quality and financial performance. The CEO will also begin preparing for a possible deposit license of the Company while at the same time creating sufficient diversification – both geographic as well as product/market based – within the operations of the Company.

The CEO will be the key representative of the institution for all purposes. The responsibilities encompass all aspects of the conduct of business, including external relations with regulators & lenders, liaison with the board and shareholders, management of operations, maintenance of a strong internal policy framework, compliance, internal controls and reporting systems, amongst other responsibilities.

The expected duration for the position is three years.


  • Master’s Degree in business, finance, economics, or a related field.
  • At least ten years of microfinance experience, including at least three years in leadership roles (CEO/CFO/COO).
  • Significant levels of energy, ambition and enthusiasm.
  • Strong, self-motivated leadership and supervision skills.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic fast growth environment and a tolerance for the uncertainty and ambiguity sometimes inherent in such environments.
  • Excellent analytical skills as well as ability to design efficient processes/procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Successful scale-up experience is a major plus.
  • Successful regional experience in Sub-Saharan Africa is also a major plus.
