2012 Microfinance Americas: The Top 100

Presenting a comparative ranking of MFIs in Latin America and the Caribbean for 2012

This paper presents the annual ranking of the leading MFIs in Latin America and the Caribbean for 2012. The sample consists of 239 MFIs whose performance information at the end of financial year 2011 was compiled and analyzed by specialists in the field. The final estimation included 159 MFIs from the entire sample.The paper uses a composite ranking methodology. It assigns each MFI a global score and ranks them according to their outreach, efficiency, and transparency. Findings include:

  • Banco FIE from Bolivia has a composite ranking of 1 with a global score of 80.07%;
  • Alternativa 19 del Sur from Mexico ranks first in terms of microenterprise growth;
  • Financiera Independencia from Mexico retains its top ranking in terms of growth in customers;
  • COCDEP from Mexico retains first place in terms of efficiency with cost per loan at USD 62;
  • ADRA – Peru from Peru retains top ranking in terms of asset quality with portfolio at risk >30 days at zero;
  • Invirtiendo from Mexico moves from a ranking of 4 in 2010 to 1 in 2011 with return on assets at 30% and return on equity at 50.3%.
