Microfinance Barometer 2017

Is microfinance still working?

For the eighth consecutive year, Convergences has published the Microfinance Barometer, in partnership with Fédération nationale des Caisses d’Epargne (FNCE), The MasterCard Foundation, Caisse des Dépôts, the European Microfinance Platform (e-MFP) and Oikocredit. This annual publication contains up-to-date key figures on financial inclusion at a global level, for Europe and for France. It analyzes the major trends of the sector and takes a look at new opportunities for microfinance in the countries of the global North and South.

This new edition points to the sustained growth, by more than 9%, in the overall loan portfolio and the number of active borrowers. It confirms trends already observed in previous editions: a greater professionalization of microfinance institutions (MFIs), dissemination of universal standards for managing social performance, and a tendency to concentrate and transform mature MFIs into banks.
