The 18th Microcredit Summit hosted by the Microcredit Summit Campaign, in partnership with the Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND) concluded last month in Abu Dhabi. The theme for the 2016 Summit was "Frontier Innovations in Financial Inclusion".
The Summit brought together nearly 1,000 participants from 70 countries to engage them in the mission of identifying the marginalized populations who have been excluded from formal financial systems, and finding ways to include and integrate them into a system that provides them with opportunities.
Among the high-level speakers were Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who initiated microloans to the poor, Queen Sofia of Spain, who has played a significant role in microfinance sector, advocate for women’s empowerment and microcredit Prince Talal of Saudi Arabia, and the chairman of the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development H.E Hussain J. Al Nowais.
