Making the Case for Digital Learning
Digital learning has the potential to mitigate some key capacity constraints in Sub-Saharan Africa’s financial inclusion efforts. However, for digital learning initiatives to succeed, financial institutions and their staff need to have a clear understanding of its value proposition. What is needed to realize the potential of digital learning in the financial sector? What can we learn from industry practitioners about this topic?
In this webinar Julias Alego of FSD Africa discusses highlights from their most recent report on digital learning for financial institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa. Julias shares what they discovered in their research around:
- Capacity development challenges and priorities for financial institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa;
- Digital learning value proposition for learners and employers;
- Recommendations for strengthening the value proposition of digital learning sector-wide.
In addition, Wachuka Gitahi from Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) discusses the value proposition of digital learning within KCB and shares progress on and challenges to realizing that value, followed by Gateway Academy presenting their work on demonstrating the value of digital learning.

Natalie Greenberg is CGAP’s Knowledge Management Officer, and in this capacity she works across teams to develop and implement strategies for more efficient and effective learning. She also works on the Gateway Academy, a Mastercard Foundation initiative aimed at building capacity for financial service providers in Sub-Saharan Africa. In this role, she oversees marketing and community-building activities. Prior to this role, she served as the manager of CGAP’s Microfinance Gateway website.
Wachuka Gitahi is as seasoned instructional designer and e-learning enthusiast with over 15 years of experience in both the private and public sector. At KCB Bank, Kenya where she is the eLearning Manager her practical approach and applied research has led to greater adaptation of online learning and expanded use of new media in developing learning content. Wachuka has contributed to the development of distance education policies and has authored teaching materials for various academic levels including Post Graduate studies. She has been proactive in the adaptation of eLearning in universities and corporate organizations. She is a member of the Institute of Human Resource Management in Kenya and is currently pursuing her Doctoral Studies in Education Technology at Walden University.
Julias Alego is the Head of Learning and Development at the Financial Sector Deepening Africa – FSD Africa, a Department for International Development –DFID UK funded program based in Nairobi. He is responsible for implementing talent management strategies to enhance staff performance and engagement at FSD Africa and across the FSD Network. He commissioned the research on the capability of digital and e-learning solutions to address capacity building needs of Financial Service Providers in Sub Saharan Africa.
Prior to his role at FSD Africa, he was the General Manager in charge of learning and leadership development at Equity bank and head of learning and talent development at Standard Chartered Bank. Julias has over 20 years of experience in human resources and is a member of the Institute of Human Resources Management in Kenya.
Thom Sinclair is a Senior Operations Officer at CGAP and leads the Gateway Academy, a MasterCard Foundation initiative aimed at building capacity for inclusive financial service providers in sub-Saharan Africa. Before joining CGAP, Thom was a Senior Knowledge Management and Learning Advisor and the Program Cycle Capacity Building Team Lead with USAID’s Policy, Planning and Learning (PPL) Bureau. In this position, he led the design and implementation of LEARN, the Agency’s flagship program cycle capacity building project. Before joining USAID, Thom worked in the private sector for the QED Group and other consulting firms on USAID projects. Thom has an MPA from Rutgers in International Public Service and Development and an MA in Political Science from Georgia State University.
