Small Enterprise Foundation's (SEF) mission is poverty alleviation in South Africa. SEF strives towards this mission primarily through the provision of enterprise micro credit to women living in poor, rural communities.
SEF employs a group-based lending methodology patterned after the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh. Potential members form themselves into groups of five, which are rigorously tested before they are officially recognized. Upon recognition groups are eligible to apply for loans, which they collectively guarantee.
About the Job:
SEF currently seeks the support of an experienced credit consultant with a track record in MSME lending to strengthen SEF’s capacity towards MSME lending and supporting in preparing the pilot program to scale. The consultant will be expected to spend about 40 – 60 percent of his/her time onsite between the two SEF offices in Tzaneen and Johannesburg, South Africa. The consultant will identify gaps in current lending policies and procedures, while building team capacity towards loan appraisal and overall risk management. The objectives for this project are as follows:
Review of lending policy and procedures.
Improvement of credit evaluation, including synthesis of key data points towards a credit summary or score (potentially used for customer segmentation).
Analysis of lending product configuration and improvement opportunities.
Building loan appraisal capacity through participation in Credit Committee meetings.
General advisory along the following framework:
The consultant will seek to understand and work within the current lending model and context, rather than prescribing alternative models. The consultant will work closely with MSME team to ensure knowledge transfer at all stages of the project. With this collaborative approach SEF aims to sustainably strengthen the team and all internal systems related to MSME lending.
