About the organization: 

UNCDF is the UN’s capital investment agency for the world’s least developed countries. It creates new opportunities for poor people and their communities by increasing access to microfinance and investment capital. UNCDF focuses on Africa and the poorest countries of Asia and the Pacific, with a special commitment to countries emerging from conflict or crisis. It provides seed capital – grants and loans – and technical support to help microfinance institutions reach more poor households and small businesses, and local governments finance the capital investments – water systems, feeder roads, schools, irrigation schemes – that will improve poor peoples’ lives.

About the Job: 

UNCDF is looking for a Senior Innovation Specialist to:

  • Work on innovations and provide technical assistance (challenge design, tools, bootcamps and hackathons) in financial health, Islamic finance and digital economy.
  • Develop capabilities for UNCDF’s program participants (entrepreneurs, founders, employees) and assist them in their journey to create and valid their proposed solutions.
  • Develop capabilities for organizations selected by UNCDF and assist them in their corporate innovation journey to create and validate their proposed solutions.
  • To partner with organizations to look for inclusive digital innovation solutions that can benefit the underserved market.


  • Bachelor’s degree in business, law, engineering, computer science, marketing, social sciences, psychology and/or related discipline is mandatory
  • At least five years of global experience and at least 3 years of working in the Asia region is mandatory.
  • At least two years of work experience in the space of behavioral science, iterative testing, deign thinking, gamification, liberated structures is mandatory.
  • At least two years of experience where it relates to designing and supporting innovations around either digital or financial services.
  • Experience in capacity development and institutional strengthening in developing countries, ideally in the context of working with start-ups or large corporates.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills and track record in producing relevant presentations, reports and other communications and knowledge materials.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and experience in organizing and facilitating consultations and workshops.
  • Sensitivity to diverse opinions and difficulties arising from differing social and cultural perceptions.

Timeline, duration of assignment, duty station and expected places of travel:

  • Expected start date 3 February 2020.
  • Initial contract of one year, expected duration of assignment is three years.
  • Home based with expected travel to countries where UNCDF operates.
