Financial Inclusion Through Mobile Banking: A Case of Bangladesh

Designing effective mobile banking services in Bangladesh

This paper identifies and examines factors influencing behavioral intention to adopt or continue using mobile banking services in Bangladesh. It aims to support mobile banking service providers and policy makers to design mobile banking services that would have a positive impact on financial inclusion in the country. For the analysis, the paper uses the innovation diffusion story and decomposed theory of planned behavior with financial cost as an additional variable. It finds that perceived financial cost, perceived risk, and subjective norms are the most influencing factors that affect people’s behavioral intention to adopt or continue using mobile banking. The paper covers the following sections in detail:

  • Financial inclusion landscape in Bangladesh with a focus on mobile banking as a tool for financial inclusion;
  • Review of related literature with a focus on the diffusions innovation theory, technology acceptance model, and theory of planned behavior;
  • Research model and formulation of 12 hypotheses;
  • Research methodology with a focus on data collection and operationalization;
  • Data analysis and results from structural equation model;
  • Findings, implications, and limitations of the study.
