Unlocking Enterprise Credit in Rural India for Women, by Women: A Scalable, Community-Led Model
This publication explores a scalable, community-led model to expand access to enterprise credit for rural women entrepreneurs in India, an underserved segment often caught in the “missing middle” between microfinance and traditional bank lending. It highlights how women-led microenterprises, despite their economic and social importance, face persistent barriers such as lack of collateral, limited credit histories, and low engagement with formal financial institutions. The report argues that traditional lending approaches fail to meet these women where they are, calling for more inclusive, gender-intentional solutions tailored to their realities.
At the core of the publication is a model that leverages women’s collectives and community networks such as self-help groups to bridge this gap. By building on existing trust, social capital, and local knowledge, the approach enables better identification of creditworthy entrepreneurs, supports capacity building, and creates pathways to formal finance at scale. The model demonstrates how combining community-based structures with tailored financial products and ecosystem partnerships can unlock credit for rural women, ultimately strengthening livelihoods, enterprise growth, and broader rural economic development.
