A New Narrative for Women’s Economic Opportunity

This publication reflects on the Gates Foundation’s four-year investment strategy to advance women’s economic opportunity in India, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. It examines barriers to women’s participation in the workforce and rural economy, including limited access to finance and assets, unpaid care responsibilities, mobility constraints, social norms, and skills gaps.

The publication shares lessons from efforts to increase women’s incomes and ownership and control of income and assets, and considers how these lessons can inform the future of women’s economic opportunity amid changing funding realities.

This publication is part of FinDev Gateway’s collection on women’s economic opportunity, bringing together research, insights, and learning from work across seven countries. Explore the collection for related research, interviews, blogs, and other resources.
