Empowering Women and Girls: Realizing the Potential for ID by Addressing the Gender Gap

The World Bank’s Mission Billion Challenge is hosting a webinar for a deep-dive on gender inclusion as part of this year’s Global Prize focused on reaching women and girls and other vulnerable populations especially during the COVID-19 crisis. According to the 2017 ID4D-Findex survey, 44 percent of women in low income countries – compared with 28 percent of men – do not have their country’s national ID or similar foundational document, limiting their access to critical services and participation in formal political and economic life.

The webinar will provide a deeper understanding of the barriers women face in obtaining and using IDs that are crucial to address when building new ID systems or rolling out services that rely on them. You’ll gain critical context on:

  • The extent of the gender gap in ID ownership.
  • The barriers and challenges women face to obtaining and using an ID.
  • How having an ID has had an impact on women.
  • How access to mobile services in a woman’s own name can support her digital and financial inclusion.

This webinar can help inform your submission for the Global Prize which seeks solutions to how countries can increase their efforts to further support vulnerable groups to access ID-related or required services and cash transfers with minimal health risks.
