BFA, a global consulting firm specializing in financial services for low income people, undertook both quantitative and qualitative surveys to understand cross-border transactions across the East African region. In this study, transactors are those who sent money, received money or traveled to another country in the region. The objective of this study is to understand:

  • The prevalence of cross-border transfers.
  • How people are currently transacting across borders, how they decide on these methods, and what their pain points are.
  • The demand for conducting cross-border transfers with mobile money.
